Street Sweeping

It’s springtime and that means street sweeping. Discovery Ridge is currently scheduled to receive street sweeping on May 8th. Please be respectful to the street sweeping crews and your neighbours by ensuring all vehicles are removed from the street so all streets can be cleaned properly.

Moose in Griffith Woods

PLEASE KEEP YOUR DISTANCE – as far away as possible! Many residents have seen one or more of the majestic moose in and around Griffith Woods recently. How lucky we are to live here with Griffith Woods and wildlife as our neighbours! However, this cohabitation can bring about safety concerns if we don’t handle ourselves appropriately. For the safety of yourself, the moose, and other residents who may encounter them in the future, please keep your distance and keep dogs on-leash.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife has been a very helpful partner in guiding our community with regard to how best to approach the moose situations. They advise the reason that moose charge is due to people getting too close. They may not even charge at the person that got too close but perhaps another innocent person further away. It is imperative that people do not get close, please do not try to get a better photo by moving towards a moose or have off-leash dogs that might run at the moose, thereby scaring them.

If you do encounter a moose, immediately back away from them to give them as much space as possible. If they do charge, run away as quickly as you are able to and step behind a large tree if need be.

Let’s leave the wildlife alone to enjoy their home in the woods, while keeping each other safe by simply keeping our distance from them!

Pathways and Trails: The Missing Links

DRCA representatives are meeting with the Calgary Parks Department to discuss the completion of the “missing link” multi-use pathways (and Rotary Greenway) between our community and Westhills Way. This will, in future, allow our residents to walk or cycle to Glenmore Park and connect to trails to downtown.

We continue to ask the City to restore the area around the Elbow Valley Constructed Wetland (damaged by the Ring Road) back to quality parkland. Some residents will recall that this area included benches, picnic tables, interpretive displays, and even a gazebo built by volunteers from our community and other organizations.

Pickleball

Spring has sprung so pickleball has begun! The two pickleball nets are now set up in the ice rink at the DRCA Recreation Facility. Happy pickleball playing!

Calgary River Valley Project

The City of Calgary is currently working on a project to create a strong and consistent approach for the future of Calgary’s river valleys. The Calgary River Valleys Project (CRVP) will provide guidance for how the City plans, uses, conserves, and builds in our river valleys.

From April 27 to June 5, Calgarians are invited to voice what is important about the river valleys to ensure that those values shape approaches to development, recreation, natural space, and flood hazard planning. Visit calgary.ca/rivervalleys to provide feedback through an online survey and learn about the upcoming River Valley Roadshow events.

Deerfoot Trail Construction

Construction work to improve the safety and reliability of Deerfoot Trail has begun near 64 Ave NE. While Discovery Ridge will not be impacted directly by this work, the city recognizes the improvements to Deerfoot Trail have the potential to impact travel times and affect residents of communities across the city. For more information, read the Deerfoot Trail Improvements Community Notice or visit the project website. You can also subscribe to project updates by visiting the project’s Stay Informed page. Inquiries can be directed to the project team by email at info@deerfootimprovements.ca.

Bottle Shack Art Project

The DRCA’s Bottle Shack, which is located in the parking lot on Discovery Ridge Boulevard across from the Cornerstone mall, is a sea container that was installed in 2020 as a permanent secure location for receiving refundable bottles and cans. These donations produce a significant amount of revenue, which helps our community association support the recreational facilities and other community events that make Discovery Ridge such a desirable place to live.

Last year, the DRCA Board decided that since the metal sea container bottle shack is a permanent feature in the community, the time had come to enhance it and make it a feature of our community space. After reviewing several options, the Board agreed that a wildlife scene was the most appropriate because it reflects Discovery Ridge’s unique position next to Griffith Woods. We will be supporting a local Alberta artist — Emily Beaudoin — who is hoping to start in mid-June (as weather permits), and the project will be completed this summer.

This is the current proposed mural, but we welcome and value your feedback. Look below the image for a place to submit comments.

The event runs from 9am-2pm. Shifts are 2 hours in length.
We need to send eight volunteers from our community. If you are able to help, please email Rhonda from Springbank Hill Community Association at vp@springbankhill.org on or by Friday, April 21, to arrange your shift time.

Casino: May 21 & May 22 @ Cowboys Casino
This is our biggest fundraiser, and we are only granted a casino approximately every 18 months. There are still shifts to be filled. Please help!

Community Cleanup

It’s springtime and that means cleanup time! Our annual spring Community Cleanup event is scheduled for Saturday, April 29, 2023. Like last year, three communities — Discovery Ridge, Signal Hill, and Springbank Hill — have combined their efforts and are sending volunteers to the event.

Event Date: Saturday, April 29, 2023
Location: Westside Kings Church parking lot (SE corner of Springbank Blvd and 69th St SW)
Time: 9 am – 2 pm

  • The City will provide trucks to collect garbage going to the landfill.
  • Other recycling vendors may include metal, electronics, tires, and household donations.
  • Unfortunately, the City cannot accept chemicals, contaminated materials, or hazardous items.
  • 30 volunteers from the three communities are needed to work one two-hour shift each.
  • Volunteers will: direct traffic, help people unload their items, support City workers and vendors, answer questions, promote community memberships, etc.

Thank you to the City of Calgary Community Standards, and Waste & Recycling, for their contributions. As well, thank you to the many volunteers in these communities who make events like this possible.

Please check acceptable items beforehand: https://www.calgary.ca/communities/community-cleanups.html

Please note, this service is available to all Calgarians and is free of charge.
