Recreation Facility Damage

Disappointingly, our beautiful Recreation Facility is not always being treated with respect and care. There has been damage that required repairs. In addition, the amount of litter and debris being strewn around the site has been steadily increasing. There are garbage cans available, so please use them and assist by reminding the younger members of your family and any visiting friends to do the same. Thank you for everyone’s support to improve this situation.

To the residents that assist with picking up litter and debris when they are at the site, we thank you! The Recreation Facility is 100% operated by community volunteers, so the more people assisting the better.

Safety and Security in Wooded Areas

If you encounter encampments or campfire setups in any of our community wooded areas or in Griffith Woods Park, please report them to 311. The 311 app is a great way to do this as photos and coordinates (a pin) of the location can be included and are very helpful to City staff.

Report active fires to 911.

Parade of Garage Sales Tomorrow

The Parade of Garage Sales in Discovery Ridge is tomorrow — Satufday, June 10 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. There is no signup process. Simply host a garage sale if you wish or cruise the neighbourhood to check out and shop the deals.

Tennis Court Lighting Project

Work on installing tennis court lighting is scheduled to begin the week of June 12 and will take a few weeks to complete. During this time there may be limited temporary closures of some of the facilities to accommodate construction activity and equipment.

Pathways and Trails

The three-member DRCA Planning Committee met with City representatives on May 3rd to discuss completing the short “missing link” pathway between Discovery Ridge and Westhills Way SW. This would allow our residents to access Glenmore Park and the City’s pathway network in future and connect with the proposed Taza development trail network. It would also complete the current dead-end Rotary Mattamy Trail by the Beaver Ponds.

We also discussed the need for the City to redesign and restore the former parkland around the Elbow Valley Constructed Wetland. Some will remember this area included interpretive displays, seating, and even a gazebo all built by volunteer organizations including the DRCA. Part of this area was sold by the City to Alberta Transportation and the rest demolished. One suggested working title is Reconciliation Park, but we’re open to suggestions.

If DRCA members are interested in assisting or would like a copy of the Missing Link Context Plan, they can contact volunteer Board Member, Doug, at dsrleighton1@gmail.com or attend the next DRCA meeting. We could use help to make both of the above improvements happen – no planning experience necessary!

Bottle Shack Beautification Project

Thank you for the feedback on the suggested design of the artwork for the Bottle Shack. Starting next week, local artist Emily Beaudin will begin painting. Enjoy watching the beautification project progress. The project should be completed in time for our Stampede Roundup.

Sponsorships Sought

If you have a business or know of a business that would be interested in providing some sponsorship to some of our events, such as the Stampede Roundup or Music in the Park, we would very much appreciate hearing from you at: drca-pres@discoveryridge.com.

Bin Set Out Times

City of Calgary Waste & Recycling representatives will be out in Discovery Ridge on bin pickup days this week. They will be tagging carts with reminders if they are placed out prior to 5 a.m.

Additionally, we have been advised that feedback provided to the City with regard to bins needing to be placed out for pickup only between 5-7 a.m. shows this is too tight of a time slot. The City is currently reviewing route schedules to start pickup in Discovery Ridge later than 7 a.m. to create a longer window for bin placement at the curb. We will provide an update as soon as more specific information is known.

Stay bear informed at this website: https://www.calgary.ca/waste/residential/be-bear-smart.html. Sign up for the Calgary Garbage Day app to receive updates and notifications.
