Western Wear Wanted

It’s that time of year again! As you dive into your spring cleaning, remember we have two great community events coming up that might be helpful.

🗑️ Community Clean Up – June 13  A perfect chance to clear out unwanted items. Visit the Community Cleanup website for full details.

🤠 Stampede Round Up – Donations Needed  This year’s event will feature a Western‑themed photo station, and we’re looking for fun accessories to stock the table. If you come across any hats, big‑buckle belts, boas, beads, funky sunglasses—anything that would make for a great silly photo—please email events@discoveryridge.com to drop off your items.

Volunteers Needed

Our community events don’t just happen — they come to life because neighbours roll up their sleeves, pitch in, and have fun doing it together. Right now, we are critically short on volunteers for THREE major upcoming events, and we truly need the community’s help. Whether you sign up with a group of friends, volunteer alongside your family, or come solo and meet new neighbours, it’s a great way to connect, laugh, and be part of something meaningful. The reality is that without more volunteers stepping forward, some of these beloved events may not continue in future years. Come help us keep the fun, connection, and community spirit alive in Discovery Ridge.

Whether you can give a few hours at one event or join us longer-term, your help truly makes a difference. These events bring families together, create memories for our kids, strengthen our community, and make Discovery Ridge such a special place to live.

The reality is simple: without volunteers, beloved community events will continue to be scaled back — or cancelled altogether.

Come help create the community you want to live in.

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Community Cleanup
June 13 | 9am–2pm

This is a combined event with three neighbouring communities — and unfortunately Discovery Ridge currently has only THREE volunteers signed up when we need 21.

If our community does not help support this event, there is a very real possibility we may not be invited to participate in future years. This annual clean-up is an incredibly valuable service for residents to dispose of unwanted household items close to home.

Even volunteering for a few hours can make a huge difference. The shifts are short—only two hours each shift.

Stampede RoundUp
June 20 | 4pm – 7pm

Our super fun family event is back with games, food trucks, music, activities, and more — but we need volunteers to help during the event. Sign up for a short 90-minute volunteer shift with a friend!!

DRCA Casino Fundraiser
July 30–31 – see shifts on the sign up page

This single casino fundraiser brings in approximately $80,000–$90,000 for our community and helps fund events, programs, advocacy, and amenities for Discovery Ridge residents.

In order for the casino fundraiser to move forward, we MUST fully staff every volunteer position — and right now, we are still short on volunteers. The good news? People are always surprised by how much fun this event is! One group of Discovery Ridge neighbours has volunteered together year after year and now treats it like a night out. Come with friends, sign up with your family (all volunteers must be at least 18), or join on your own and meet some new neighbours while helping support our community. We truly just need more bodies to make this happen — and many hands make for a fun and memorable experience!

Let’s work together to keep Discovery Ridge vibrant, connected, and full of community spirit — not just for today, but for years to come.

Stampede Prop Donations Needed

We’re excited to introduce a new addition to this year’s Stampede RoundUp — a fun photo station! Pick a costume, go as silly as you like, and snap a photo. It might become your next family Christmas card or simply a memory that makes you smile every time you see it.

Have props to share? Hats, boots, glasses, bolo ties, and more are welcome. Please contact Lillian at events@discoveryridge.com to arrange pickup or dropoff.

Shirley’s Greenhouses Returns

After another incredible season serving our community, everyone’s favourite — Shirley’s Greenhouses Farm Stand — is returning to Discovery Ridge in late May!

Starting this season, Pete, Jo, and their amazing team will be at the DRCA Rec Facility every Sunday from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, bringing the fresh local produce you’be been craving all winter long. Think vine-ripened tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, sweet peppers, and so much more — all grown in fields and greenhouses near Carstairs, Alberta.

More than just a farm stand, it’s a chance to connect directly with local farmers while supporting fresh, healthy, Alberta-grown food right here in our community.

Watch for the full farm stand schedule and official opening date coming soon!

Household Hazardous Waste: Free Drop-Off in Calgary

Did you know the City of Calgary offers free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) drop-off sites at 11 convenient locations across the city? There’s no cost to use these locations, and they’re designed to be quick, easy, and safe for residents.

HHW includes everyday household items that should not go in your blue, green, or black cart, such as:

  • paints and stains
  • batteries
  • cleaners
  • automotive fluids and chemicals

Placing these items in your carts can increase the chance of fires, toxic fumes, and serious harm in our homes and our community. Taking HHW to a proper drop-off site helps keep everyone safe while protecting the environment.

Before throwing something away, take a moment to check if it’s hazardous—and bring it to an HHW drop-off site instead. To find a drop-off location near you, visit calgary.ca/HHW.

*This program is for residential drop-off only.

Community Cleanup on June 13

Every year, our Community Cleanup gives residents the perfect excuse to finally part ways with those mysterious, questionable, and why‑did‑I‑ever‑own‑this items hiding in basements and garages. This time, Discovery Ridge Community Association is joining forces with the Signal Hill Community Association and the Springbank Hill Community Association for a full‑blown mega‑cleanup event.

Are you wondering what you can and cannot dispose of? Find all the details you need here.

If you can’t make our event on June 13 — simply check the Calgary cleanup listings at calgary.ca/cleanups to find a location that fits your schedule.

A bit of bad news: Our partner communities already have more volunteers signed up than we do. We cannot let that stand. Discovery Ridge pride is on the line. Let’s step up and fill the 15 slots we are asked to do.  We’re asking for just 2 hours of your time. Two! That’s less time than it takes to find your keys when you’re already late. Click the Sign Up to Volunteer button on this page and help us reclaim our rightful volunteer glory.

Bins and Bears

It’s the time of year when bear activity tends to increase. Please remember that we can do our part to help protect wildlife and our special community. Consider the best practice of storing your bins in your garage or other secured enclosure, if you do not already do so, and keep them secured until the morning of pick up.

Street Sweeping On May 4

The City’s Spring Clean-up program, or street sweeping, removes debris and leftover materials from winter on the roadway. The program begins in mid-April (weather permitting) and runs through June, with community sweeping happening Monday through Fridays, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Street cleaning is scheduled for Discovery Ridge on May 4. If you’d like a reminder, sign up for e-mail or text notifications.

City crews will put up signs with “No Parking” symbols a few days earlier at specific locations around the community. These signs are verified by Calgary Parking, which helps enforce the ban. Community parking bans occur Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Any vehicle that has not been removed from the street during the ban is subject to a ticket. Calgary Parking uses camera vehicles for enforcement, and tickets will arrive through the mail. In certain areas, vehicles may also be subject to towing if the “No Parking” signs are placed along the roadway. These signs will be placed at least a minimum of 24 hours prior to street sweeping.
