The holidays bring joy and celebration — and about 25% more waste from wrapping paper, packaging, and food. A few simple changes can make a big difference.
Sustainability
Some simple ways to celebrate sustainably are:
- Give experiences instead of things — memories last longer than stuff.
- Make or repurpose gifts — handmade treasures always come with heart.
- Get creative with wrapping — reuse bags, bows, or try fabric wrapping.
- Shop with purpose — plan ahead and choose thoughtful gifts.
- Reduce food waste — plan your meals, enjoy leftovers, or send extras home with guests.
Christmas Tree Composting
When the celebrations wind down, give your real Christmas tree an eco-friendly farewell:
- Remove all decorations, cut your tree into smaller pieces, and place them in your green cart.
- Bring your undecorated, unbagged tree to any designated drop-off site.
Holiday Collection Schedule Changes
For some communities, home holiday pickup days for blue, black, and green carts are shifting:
- Thursday, Dec 25 → Monday, Dec 22
- Thursday, Jan 1 → Monday, Dec 29
Regular Thursday collection resumes on January 8. Check your pickup schedule.
This change should not affect Discovery Ridge. Our pickup days are December 24 (blue cart), December 30 (black cart), and December 31 (blue and green carts).
Thank you, Discovery Ridge! Your efforts help keep our city clean, green, and joyful throughout the season.
Wishing you a warm, sustainable, and happy holiday season!
